Female Social Media Guru UK Awards 2009 (Official Line)
March 10, 2009
The award serves to celebrate the wealth of female speakers and practitioners of social media living in UK. In doing so its objective is to challenge the current under-representation of females on event panels by offering a high profile platform for women.
Anyone can nominate a person to be one of the five speakers at the final event, to be held in April 2009, via a previous posting on this blog.
The five will be selected through a poll of industry members, hosted on the Social Glue blog. By asking some of the UK’s best connected social media users to utilise their medium of expertise in order to promote themselves across Twitter, their blogs and respective communities we are ensuring maximum exposure for the competition, nominee pool as a whole and associated sponsors.
Each speaker will choose a subject they want to present about (subject to liaison with the event guardians to avoid any cross-over on the day).
Speeches from the event will be video recorded (courtesy of Wordia.com) and hosted on a dedicated competition site built by Brando Social. The site will then host a further round of voting by the industry at large (open to those outside of the UK) to choose a winner. All profits from ticket sales for the event will be donated to the Macmillan’s Cancer charity. The event winner gets to choose which specific sector of the wide-ranging care offered by Macmillans will benefit.
Additional prizes for the winner will be subject to event sponsors.

Voted for ya Judith!! YOU GO GURL!!
March 12, 2009 at 11:08 pm
@kitschbitch should be on the list
March 13, 2009 at 9:43 am
Oh please, what an absolute crock! How can you call this credible when you’ve got a few PR account execs and account managers on the list??
I do wish the PR industry would quit with the ononistic list making. Get over yourselves!
March 13, 2009 at 9:53 am
I voted for Vikki Chowney (@vikkichowney). I used to work with Vikki and she’s a very dedicated communications professional.
March 13, 2009 at 9:54 am
Hi Dave,
Thanks for the comment. Firstly I’m not in PR nor are many people of that list. I’m a social professional.
The first round of nominations is open to anyone. Therefore you will see a mix of senior and more junior people there. I personally have no problem with this as it is up to the community to decide who is credible or not.
If you take some time to read the awards process you will see this is a little more than a list and I am more than sure the 5 people that get through will be up to your standard.
March 13, 2009 at 9:58 am
Judith, with Suw a close second (after Ada promotion). Sorry, never heard of Vikki so far, though clearly should keep an eye out
March 13, 2009 at 10:22 am
It got to be Amanda Rose and Jaz Cummins this year, as they both did an immense job for Twestival charity fundraiser.
March 13, 2009 at 10:27 am
Oh, I forgot to nominate Joanna Geary, who turned Birmingham Post, once ailing regional online news site into one of the most successful social news site.
It’s not PRs who’s doing a great job in social media you know!
March 13, 2009 at 10:59 am
Why on earth isn’t Michelle Goodall (@greenwellys) on this list?
She’s an inspiration to countless people, ranging from client-side brands to agencies and individuals. She never seems to sleep, as she’s always being too enthusatic about innovation; training others, giving advice and generally having a positive impact/influence within the online PR and communications community.
By my reckoning, she deserves a late entry!
March 13, 2009 at 11:00 am
@jazzcummins should be there too
March 13, 2009 at 11:00 am
I meant @jazcummins with one z,,,sorry
March 13, 2009 at 11:04 am
Jeeez guys. You’ve had 2 weeks.
OK. I am going to try and add them but it might restart the poll. Then I’m going to be in everyone’s bad book.
So I am taking down votes achieved to date and will add them at the end if that happens. Fingers crossed!
March 13, 2009 at 11:11 am
Thank you!
March 13, 2009 at 11:12 am
Unfortunately I can’t add anyone now it’s started. Where were all your nominations before!
OK Michelle Goodall, Joanna Geary and Jaz Cummins you will get your own additional poll. But because that means people could vote for you and another you will only be considered for the final 5 if you are head and shoulders above 6th spot. It will also be the call of the community.
Why is life soooo complicated!
March 13, 2009 at 11:26 am

Maybe you can add everybody’s twitter links to the list to the post above as well, so that people can find everybody who is nominated:)
March 13, 2009 at 12:09 pm
How responsive. Thanks. Will let some folk know about the poll
March 13, 2009 at 12:09 pm
I voted for Judith Lewis =) Slightly biased seeing as she is a fellow SEO Chick but she is damn good at Social Media.
March 13, 2009 at 12:17 pm
You’re missing loads of people on this list that have been active for years… Anyhow I voted for my boss!
March 13, 2009 at 12:19 pm
Yep I’m fairly sure there are some females wondering the British Isles who aren’t on here.
March 13, 2009 at 1:09 pm
Isn’t that supposed to be *Amy* Sample Ward? Her name is a bit longer than most but I feel she might be put at a bit of a disadvantage by being shortened…
March 13, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Jonathan yes you are quite right. Unfortunately I can’t edit the poll now its live. Sorry Amy!
March 13, 2009 at 2:19 pm
Hey – What about our Sandrine Plasseraud (@MeToo)??

This list showcases some serious talent, but one person you should definitely add is Priya Prakash – @priyascape / http://www.priyascape.com/ who’s currently head of product at social mobile sensation Flirtomatic.
Priya’s an inspirational speaker who can really connect with her audience. She spoke on the Chinwag Live: User Centred Advertising panel I organised in Manchester in April 2008 (podcast here http://url.ie/1b7i), and has enlivened many many other events including, no doubt, SXSW Interactive where she’s speaking this Monday 16 March (http://url.ie/1b7j).

Those marked late can only qualify for top 5 as long as they aren’t in the same organisation as the other finalists and they achieve significantly more votes than position 6.
March 16, 2009 at 3:39 pm
Those marked late have significantly more votes than many of the ones who are “on time”. Why would you limit them to only be eligible for top 5? (Other than because it’s your damn poll, that is.
March 16, 2009 at 3:56 pm
The reason is because firstly they didn’t meet the first deadline so to be fair to those that did there has to be no debate about the fact they deserve to go through. They are 3 and there are 25 of the others. So I am thinking who can cause me the biggest headache! A dangerous assumption I know.
Also it is possible to vote twice for the 3 late comers even if you have already voted for someone from the main poll so they are more likely to get extra votes.
And ITS MY POLL!!!
March 16, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Joanna Geary please?
March 16, 2009 at 5:05 pm
Hi, You must click next to her name on the poll.
thanks
Jamie
March 17, 2009 at 5:31 pm
I’ve added my vote for Joanna Geary!
She is a lovely lady who works very hard.
May the best woman win!
All the best, Karen
March 19, 2009 at 8:47 am
Voting isn’t fair with two polls, the second poll is only a choice of three, they are guaranteed to get more votes then the ones in the first poll regardless of socialglues comment above. Please take this into consideration, we were excited to be 5th until we realised the power of poll 2

Great initiative to celebrate success, innovation and people delivering real value using ‘web 2.0′ – well done all organisers and nominees.
Just a few quick questions; why can’t we celebrate innovation, real-world benefits, success etc. by all? Why do you feel the need to focus just on the girls? These nominees are being rightly highlighted for their contribution and their gender shouldn’t be a factor! I thought web 2.0 was supposed to remove barriers…?
March 20, 2009 at 10:39 am
Hi Kevin,
This is a debate we have had over the last few weeks. You are right there should be no division on gender but if you look at speaker panels there clearly is. Hopefully this combats the problem.
